Buddhist Sharon Salzburg says, “Loving-kindness and compassion are the basis for wise, powerful, sometimes gentle, and sometimes fierce actions that can really make a difference—in our own lives and those of others.” Our church prepares for the fierce and gentle actions that will express our deep love for each other and Baltimore. We seek to be powerful—able to enact a liberating vision—and we seek to be wise.

"Planting Seeds, Tending Blossoms" with Rev. David Carl Olson

I hope that the seeds I plant in my garden will bear true. In time, I hope that they will produce beautiful blossoms that delight eye and nose (and occasionally tongue!). In a transformative system like a church, some of the “seeds” we plant produce unexpected “fruit.” How do we learn from our experiments and how do we change in order to grow?

Our church considers the meaning of resurrection—the expected renewal of Spring, and the unexpected renovation of who we are and who we dream we can become. If our Sunday-morning-aim is to rehearse the Rule and Realm of Universal Love, can we learn from resurrection stories the ways that our relatedness can set us free?

"I Love a Parade-Hosannah!" with Rev. David Carl Olson

The equinox comes and with it, the expectation that spring has fully arrived. The arrival of this meteorological moment in the life of the earth dances with notions of the Christian religion, of the arrival of Jesus in Jerusalem to do a work only he could do. What are our “mission and vison” conversations leading us to take on as our unique task in this season of life?

"The Lone Wild Bird" with Revs. John Manwell and Phyllis Hubbell
Sunday Mar 06, 2016
Sunday Mar 06, 2016
We come together out of our longing for oneness with all that is—ourselves, others, the universe itself, some would say with God. Can we imagine ourselves as the “lone, wild bird” of our song, soaring high and far, yet always at one with the spirit of love that joins all life? The church then is where we grow ever more fully into that spirit and stretch our vision of what it asks of us.

Citing the thoughts of Rev. Dr. W. Waldemar W. Argow, minister of First Unitarian between 1940 and 1959, the current holder of that position reflects on our reliance on science, inquiry and evidence in shaping a faith for our time.
