We gather on the first day of the new year simply to be and to breathe. To be one community with each other. To breathe in the peace that sustains us our spirits in times of change. To breathe out love to a world that needs it. And while we’re breathing, we will sing favorite songs, and enact the ritual of the burning bowl.

December 25, 1939, England was at war, and the overall mood was one of fear and anxiety. In his Christmas radio broadcast, King George VI overcame his stutter to read a poem that asked the listener not to search for a light, but to go out into the darkness, to tread “gladly into the night.” Now, in this time of fear and anxiety, made worse by our own personal trials and losses, how can we learn to stop searching for a light, but go – if not gladly, then at least bravely – together, into the night?

In the time of year when spirits are “up” in a flurry of activity—and alcohol! and commercialism! and so much more!—how do we allow the “down” side of who we are? A morning of inner reflection that honors the darkening of days and even the depression that visits many of us in the winter.

Rev. David Carl Olson May 26, 2013

On a weekend when we remember those who have served in our armed forces, our Minister remembers those who served in other struggles and received commissions only as members of the Unitarian Universalist clergy.

This is a day for thinking about our liberal and liberating faith and its core values.

The story of Jesus is the story of a criminal executed by the state. Has capital punishment ever been the right choice for a society? Is it now?

At our annual Christmas Eve service we sing familiar songs, hear the old story of the birth of Jesus and think about the meaning of being a light that shines in the darkness.

This podcast includes Rev. Olson’s homily, “Rachel, Weeping for All Her Children,” and a few selections of Christmas music.
